Playcraft Chainage

An Android application that turns a phone in a car mount into a survey record. Chainage, position, speed and heading are burnt into the video as it records, so the resulting file is self-describing evidence rather than footage needing a separate log.

Capabilities

  • Chainage as cumulative GPS distance from where the recording starts
  • A roughness estimate per 20, 100 or 1000 m segment, from a quarter-car model run on the phone’s accelerometer
  • Per-segment quality flags for speed variation, mounting tilt and sample density
  • Layered GPS filter chain — accuracy gating, jump rejection and a Kalman estimator
  • Chainage held when speed stays below about 1 km/h for 3 s, so it does not drift at a standstill
